Set against the magnificent backdrop of the western slopes of the Black Mountain, Phobjikha Valley, also known as Gangtey Valley is a beautiful, bowl shaped valley nestled in the heart of Bhutan. This remote and pristine valley is renowned for its breathtaking natural beauty, characterized by rolling hills, verdant meadows and vast marshlands. One of the most remarkable features of this region is its role as a crucial habitat for the endangered black-necked crane, adding to the valley’s ecological significance. The valley borders the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park and hosts the Black-Necked Crane Festival every year which is celebrated in the Gangtey Gompa courtyard to conserve and protect these beautiful endangered birds that visit every year. With limited human settlements and connectivity, this region remains as a tranquil and peaceful region; one where visitors can immerse themselves in Bhutan’s untouched rural life and culture.
Gangtey Monastery: The Gangtey Monastery or Gangtey Gompa is an architectural wonder located in the heart of Phobjikha Valley dating back to the 17th century and is the main seat of the Pema Lingpa tradition of the Nyingma School of Buddhism. What is interesting about this monastery is its role in the migration of the black-necked cranes every winter - where the majestic birds circle it three times upon arrival and departure every year.
Black-necked Crane Education Center: The Black-necked Crane Education Center serves as a vital conservation hub dedicated to protecting these endangered birds. The center provides valuable information about the cranes’ behavior, habitat, and conservation efforts, along with a unique opportunity at birdwatching. The center also offers educational programs focused on the importance of preserving this unique species and its fragile ecosystem.
Gangtey Nature Trail: The Gangtey Nature Trail is a scenic hiking route that winds through the picturesque landscapes of Phobjikha Valley. Stretching to about 4.5 km, this trail provides an immersive experience of the region’s pristine wilderness, the valley’s rich biodiversity, and glimpse into the local villages surrounding the area. This hike provides a comprehensive journey through both natural and cultural highlights in the area.
